Chairwoman's welcome speech

Helen Ng, Chair of Self Storage Association Asia, opened Self Storage Expo Asia 2024 by welcoming the over 120 members across Asia and around the world.

She highlighted that Japan has seen investments via acquisition that show international confidence in the future of its self storage industry. China is undergoing a boom driven mostly by domestic investment including Hong Kongers. The investment that was on display in Bangkok in September 2023 was starting to turn into new locations to serve the Thai public.

The industry is watching to see who is the dark horse that will charge into a growth phase. Korea is on the move with companies like IAMBOX exploding. And we consider countries like Jordan and the UAE to be Asia - West Asia.

In Hong Kong and Singapore, institutional investors have entered the fray in a big way and are changing how business is done. Operators in Singapore been actively engaging with the authorities to emphasize the pivotal role self storage plays in empowering MSMEs to thrive and grow. Helen urged operators to stand together and advocate for a favourable industry environment. She expressed her gratitude for their ongoing support as the Association presents a united front in these pivotal moments, and as she continues to engage with the authorities in her capacity as Chairperson of the SSAA.

Helen concluded by saying that the self storage industry leadership in Asia needs to turn our radar on to social changes around us. Purposeful leadership renewal is a key theme in today’s dynamic business landscape and is necessary to ensure continued growth and adaptability. She shared that the board are looking into this at the SSAA and are committed to fostering greater diversity within the board.
